Why might I need braces?

  • Aesthetics – If you would like to change the look of your smile, Invisalign may be a solution for you.
  • Reduced risk of tooth decay – Misaligned teeth often cause an uneven wear pattern on your smile. The constant wearing of the same teeth can lead to tooth erosion and decay.
  • Better oral hygiene – You may also have overcrowding of your teeth. When too many teeth are competing for too little space, it can be difficult to clean the teeth and gums effectively. It is much easier to clean straight teeth that are properly aligned.
  • Reduced risk of TMD– Temporomandibular jaw dysfunction is thought to be caused by misaligned teeth. Headaches, facial pains and grinding teeth during sleep can result from excessive pressure to the temporomandibular joint. Realigning the teeth can reduce pressure, and potentially reduce these symptoms.

Braces & Invisalign Orthodontics, Edmonton Dentist

Braces: How does the process work?

First, your dentist or orthodontist will take panoramic x-rays, conducts visual examinations and bite impressions of the whole mouth before deciding on the best course of treatment.

Determining treatment options for your smile

These dental aligners are removable and are made of a clear plastic. Invisalign works in much the same way as fixed dental braces. Invisalign® treatment consists of a series of custom-made aligning trays. The dentist changes the trays every several weeks to fit the new tooth configuration. In addition to the reduced visual impact, Invisalign® aligning trays can be temporarily removed for important occasions – meaning that treatment duration is patient-controlled.

Not all patients are candidates for Invisalign®. Ask your dentist today if you would like an Invisalign consultation.

Can adults benefit from orthodontics?

It is a common perception that orthodontics are for children. While orthodontics was originally aimed at treating children and teenagers, almost one third of orthodontic patients are now adults.

Because your teeth impact clarity of speech, chewing ability and facial symmetry, many patients look at Invisalign as an option to straighten their smile. More serious issues such as TMD, digestive issues, periodontal disease and tooth decay can also be a reason for an adult to consider Invisalign treatment.
